Westlake's Best Kept Secret

When her husband was transfered in the early 1980s, Edith Eva relinquished her teaching position in East Cleveland and moved to the growing west side. She began to substitute in local daycares and kindergartens where she combined her Montessori training with her preschool teaching experience to write the curriculum for teaching reading to four, five, and six year old students. A fervent believer in the benefits provided by focusing on phonics and objects, Edith could see the outstanding academic progress made possible through the use of these teaching methods with small groups. She began to tutor local students while assembling her own materials and teaching aids.

With a staff that included two teachers and a speech and language pathologist, Edith opened Children's Learning Center in 1986 to offer preschool classes at her 1,000 square foot location at The Crossings in Westlake. The results were so rewarding, that within nine years Children's Learning Center outgrew its original facilities and moved into its present 2,000 square foot location at The Atrium in 1995. We recently visited Children's Learning Center and listened as Edith described her school and curriculum;

Children's Learning Center offers tutoring for preschool though high school students. We offer most of the school subjects, test-taking skills, language, spelling, creative writing, study skills, proficiency preparation, reading, algebra, geometry, and math. Each of our teachers has their own classroom where they correlate an individualized curriculum based on the reading, writing, and math materials that I have written for each grade level. Our success is measured by the progress our clients make in their schoolwork and their gains in confidence, self-control, and self-esteem.

We have five teaching classrooms that are approximately 12' by 12' in size. One of our teachers uses her room to teach all subjects to two or three four-year old through seventh grade students at a time. In the next classroom we have a teacher who is very adept at teaching all the elementary school subjects in addition to reading and writing for the upper grades. She's also an artist and teaches an art class during the summer.

We have a speech and language classroom which is also the testing room for our licensed school psychologist and a larger classroom which feature a nine foot, rare map of the world on which the students and teachers can write. Our fifth classroom is where our high school math teacher holds sessions in algebra, geometry, and all the high school math subjects.

Most of our clients work on a semester basis or by the month. We have summer, fall, and winter-spring programs. We work with both the remedial and enrichment area levels of study as a supplement to the public and private schools. We're recommended by private and public schools and by pediatricians. We have built working relationships with many counselors and the Cleveland Clinic testing facilities. We have a speech and language pathologist and a licensed school psychologist. We work very closely with parents and students to help them reach their educational objectives. It works!

Children's Learning Center provides a learning atmosphere that's often been called Westlake's Best Kept Secret. Call or stop by Children's Learning Center today and don't forget to tell them that The Advocate sent you!
