Bom and raised in Sandusky, Ohio, Dr. David M. Murphy, DDS began practicing with Bay Area Dental Group after graduating from The Ohio State College of Dentistry in 1987. In September 1991, Dr. Murphy opened a practice of his own in Sandusky where he practiced until 2001. His career in Westlake began in November 2001, when he purchased a local practice from Dr. Steve Ratcliff, an educator at the LD Pankey Institute, a continuum education facility for dentists who are pursuing excellence in the "relationship style" of practice. We visited with Dr. Murphy recently and listened as he explained to us the importance of individual relationships between dentists and their patients and outlined his practice's offerings:
My interest in dentistry was piqued by a combination of my desire to help people, and my desire to be involved with the creative aspect of a science field. Dentistry allows me to be the artist and the scientist at the same time because in creating beautiful and healthy smiles, I get to be a sculptor and create the perfect shape for teeth. Also, to make the replacement tooth, (crown, inlay or onlay,) we 're concerned with making sure that it looks as real as enamel and that the outline of the tooth is dictated by the shadow behind the tooth. On the subconscious level, how the light reflects off the surface of the tooth can influence the way you see the shape of the tooth. Dentistry really challenges me to be the best artist I can while being the best scientist I can. That's what I find most rewarding about dentistry, in addition to being able to help people and listen to them one-on-one.

From there, I look at myself as a servant who helps you attain those goals. Those goals may be to improve your smile, make changes to the shape, color, or arrangement of your teeth, or make sure you can get through holiday dinners without your jaw becoming sore, clicking, popping, or distracting you.
