Founded in Shelby, Ohio on March 26, 1923, The Shelby Company has been proudly servicing the packaging needs of its customers with folding cartons, header cards, sleeves, counter displays, posters and specialized packaging for over 82 years. In 1930, Shelby moved to West 117th and Madison Avenue in Cleveland at the request of its principal customer, occupying approximately 7,000 square feet in their facility. In the mid 1950's Shelby moved to a location on West 150th Street, and in 1968 to their present location in Westlake, Ohio. Shelby currently has forty-five employees. Most of their products are printed on their six color and four color presses; however, Shelby does also manufacture unprinted packaging.

Over the years, Shelby has won a number of awards from its customers for service and product quality, and has received recognition for its packaging structural design capability. Dick Rapacz, who purchased Shelby in 1993, believes such recognition is the result of the service culture that existed at Shelby over its long tradition. That culture is based on having individuals who share a positive attitude and a real caring approach to both team members, suppliers, and customers. Dick noted, "We try very hard to follow the Golden Rule in terms of how we work together and service our customers. We're well aware that it takes individuals cooperatively working together as a team to provide our customers the type of service they require. When our customers call in, we do everything possible to satisfy their needs. We try to take the word "'can't" out of our vocabulary and find ways to satisfy those special challenges. Bottom line, we attempt to do our very best to help our customers grow and prosper."

Shelby's creative structural design department has been very instrumental in helping the Company develop new business opportunities over the last several years. It is in this department where the packaging is designed to meet the customers' packaging structural, visual appeal, product insertion and economic needs. Prototype samples are prepared on the Company's Artios Cad System and provided to the customer for review and comments. Once approved, the process begins of getting ready the multiple tasks of producing the packaging and delivering the packaging on time.

The substrates used for Shelby's packaging consist of chipboard (paperboard) and micro-flute materials. Their minimum production run is approximately 1000 cartons, etc., and up to a few million at a time. Normal delivery is two to three weeks after final approval of the packaging details by their customers.

The company that originally requested that Shelby move to the Cleveland area in 1930 continues to remain a valued customer.
